Skiing is inherently a social activity. There are definitely deep days when it is every man for himself, but the majority of the time skiing is an opportunity to make new friends, deepen relationships, and enjoy good conversation. I grew up skiing with my Dad, it is how we bonded. In High School I skied at Snowbird every weekend with my friends, and now I ski with my wife and family as often as I can. So when my Dad asked me to help cross off his bucket list item of skiing every resort in Utah, I thought it would be a great way to continue our skiing relationship and see some resorts I have never been to.
I have driven through Beaver, Utah at least a hundred times in my life on my way to St. George, Las Vegas, or California, but I had no idea that it held one of Utah’s hidden gems. Nestled up the canyon just 30 minutes east of Beaver, Eagle Point is a little off the beaten path for most Utah skiers. With 9 world class resorts within an hour drive from Salt Lake City, I felt it would be impossible for Eagle Point to offer something that deserves the three and half hour drive south. I was pleasantly surprised, and I think you will be too.
As we were driving up the canyon just east of Beaver, all I could think was that this place is going to be a joke. In my head I pictured a couple of ancient two man chair lifts operated by the local bumpkins. When we pulled up to the resort I knew I was in for a shock when there was a parking attendant waiting to direct us to our spot in a parking lot half full of cars already, and saw the beautiful skyline lodge.
Everyone we encountered was incredibly nice and treated us like old friends. We were assigned a mountain host, who showed us the inside and outs of the entire resort. The Monarch triple chair and the Skyline double chair were easy to moderate terrain, and the perfect place for beginners and families with small children. We then migrated over to the Lookout quad chair which had some excellent steep terrain and great tree skiing.
After a solid few hours of skiing, we rounded out our day with a late lunch at the Outpost Grill, where we had the opportunity to sit with down with part owner and CEO Shane Gadbaw and hear about his plans for the resort. Shane’s goal is to create a destination resort and he has done a pretty good job so far. Eagle Point is riddled with beautiful homes you can rent, more affordable condos, delicious food, and friendly employees.
Now don’t get me wrong. Eagle Point is not as luxurious as Deer Valley or as steep and deep as Snowbird. The lifts are slow and the resort is not huge. However, to go back to my original point, skiing is social. When the lifts are a little slow, you have more time to talk and enjoy the company of those you are with. But one of the most alluring points of Eagle Point is the affordability. To ski with a family at either of the aforementioned resorts would run a family of four over a thousand dollars for a weekend getaway. Eagle Point is easily half as much and just as much fun.
